Presentation Team

The ACT Presentation Team is made up of more than 40 Chico High students from all high school grade levels. These young people spend countless hours at lunchtime, before and after school, and even on weekends and vacations, creating multimedia presentation pieces designed to share student work and our commitment to building a program that inspires students to learn and look to their future. Older students (our veterans) teach the new students how to develop effective presentations and how to speak in front of large audiences. The only direction team members receive from the ACT instructional staff is to "teach us as you would like to be taught." That is all the encouragement they seem to need. The results are exciting and surprising. The team has traveled throughout California, and to Colorado, Washington, and to Florida, presenting at major state and national education conferences. For the last two years, the ACT Presentation Team has traveled throughout California, performing, sharing, teaching, and making new friends with elementary school children. Students use reflection and self-evaluation as tools to assure that their presentations improve and evolve, and that they have the potential to positively affect their audience. This is one of our program's most effective service learning projects.

Students believe what they are doing is important. So do we! Their dedication is obvious. They receive no high school credit for their efforts and pay their way to each presentation.

Their presentations are a wonderful experience. It is exciting to watch as our students try out new presentation pieces, staff old pieces with new presenters, and inject new technology into their performance. Many of our presenters each year are Òrookies.Ó It is a treat for the ACT teachers and our veterans to watch as these new students mature into seasoned presenters. The teamÕs presentations are never dull. The excitement level and the potential for technical ÒdisasterÓ are always very high. That is what makes this so much fun! We could not be more proud of our students.

ACT students love to present. If your school or district is looking for someone to share their experiences related to the design and implementation of an integrated, career-focused smaller learning community, why not have the whole ACT Presentation Team do the job. Or, if you would like our students to visit your elementary schools with their wonderful "Don't Laugh at Me" program, they are ready to go.
Our students have served as keynote speakers at several education conferences and as the featured presentation at a county-wide inservice day. The team also loves to make videos for conferences to be shown in general assemblies. We would enjoy visiting your school or district or presenting at your conference.
